Art making and firefighting.
Hi there. Thanks for taking a moment. I’m Ken from Dallas where I work as an artist and also as a full-time firefighter. I’m a painter, mostly. Oils and watercolors. I’ve been an artist my whole life, I suppose. I can trace it back at least to kindergarten when I stole a horse drawing done by my friend’s big brother (maybe a 4th grader) to school and lied and said I’d drawn it. So at least by 5 or 6 I had an appreciation of art and I could lie!
I studied art in college. I also fell in love, married my wife Carolyn, and we had a son. All before graduating with a BFA in painting in 1990. Trouble years followed with me confused about how to be a family provider while not giving up on my dreams of being a painter. Lots of hard times and terrible jobs until the fire service presented itself in the mid-nineties. Now, 27 years in as a firefighter, I’m an exhibiting artist here in Dallas and elsewhere.
I’m a Captain at the firehouse. I paint on my days off and I’ve got about 3 years to go till I leave to become, at long last, a full time artist.
That’s it for now. Just a quick introduction. Thank you.
Ken
